Stylishly You: Adapting to Menswear Trends While Keeping Your Unique Look

How can you adapt to the trends shaping menswear without losing your unique style?

That’s the million dollar question.

If you’re like me, you want to keep your wardrobe looking fresh and current, but you don’t want all the guesswork that comes with chasing trends.

I caught up with Chris Warren, Turtleson’s VP of Sales and Merchandising, to talk about what trends he’s seeing as he criss-crosses the country meeting with apparel buyers.

If you want to keep your personal style relevant without feeling like you’re stepping too far out of your comfort zone, here are the trends Chris has spotted…

Chinos Are Back

CW: “For almost every guy, his go-to pant these days is a 5-pocket pant. They’re easy to take care of, they’re great to travel with, they’re great to be active in, but you can wear them to the office as well.

You should definitely have 5-pockets in your wardrobe, but you should also have a little dressier khaki pant like our Stateline Twill Chino as well. It’s a traditional flat-front chino, but it also has a modern leg to it so you get that classic look but with a modern fit.”

Hoodies Are Here To Stay

CW: “In the last three or four years, hoodies have really come into their own. Hoodies have become a really big thing and it’s appropriate to wear a hoodie in the workplace or on the golf course. Guys are even wearing hoodies under suits and sport coats. You see it all the time.

We keep our line balanced, so you can go with something sporty and stretchy like the Joey Performance Hoodie or something with a softer, more traditional hand like the Lester Oxford Performance Hoodie or our Wallace Hoodie.”

Crewnecks Are In Demand

CW: “Quarter-zip sweaters have been in style for 15-20 years, and that’s not going to end any time soon. But we also believe very strongly in a classic crewneck, which we do in quite a few styles covering everything from an active, performance piece like the Brock Performance Crewneck, to our famous merino crewneck, all the way to our beautiful MacKay Cashmere Crewneck.”

“A classic crewneck is really important in balancing out your wardrobe.”

Prints on polos

CW: “Polos are really the cornerstone of every guy’s wardrobe today, and prints have been really big for the past five or six years. We do a lot with these small, neat prints that really from 10 feet away look like a semi-solid. They’re easy to wear, and we offer a lot of great colors.

We also love novelty prints, but prints that aren’t too far out there. Our Morgan Performance Polo has a beautiful little palm tree print that comes in a lot of different colors but again, from five or ten feet away, it’s just a pretty shirt. You don’t necessarily know it’s palm trees.

Balance Is The Ultimate Trend

The simplest way to keep your wardrobe looking fresh is to have a variety of versatile styles to draw from. Bonus points if those pieces mix and match.

With comfy, classic pieces on hand, you’ll never have to feel like you’re stuck in a rut and you’ll always look your best.
