Performance polos & layers

A fresh polo starts before laundry day. Let a damp piece air out instead of leaving it bundled in a golf bag.

01

Prep

Turn inside out. Sort with similar colors and keep away from rough or lint shedding items.

02

Wash

Use the label’s cycle and temperature. Measure detergent for your load; more is not always better.

03

Dry

Remove promptly and smooth the collar. Air dry, or use the dryer setting allowed on the label.

04

Skip

Avoid fabric softener and unnecessary heat. Keep direct iron heat off logos and embroidery.

My polo isn’t fresh even after washing. What should I try?
  1. Turn it inside out and inspect the underarms and collar. If the garment and detergent instructions permit, pretreat those areas with an appropriate liquid detergent.
  2. Wash with enough room for water to circulate. Follow the detergent’s dose for load size and soil level rather than adding an extra capful.
  3. Try an additional rinse if the fabric feels soapy or has residue. Skip softener and scent beads; fragrance doesn’t remove the underlying soil.
  4. Check the piece before drying. If odor remains, repeat a label safe wash or ask our team before increasing heat or using stronger treatments.
  5. Dry completely before putting it away. After the next sweaty wear, wash promptly or hang it where air can circulate until laundry day.

Basis: Turtleson’s existing performance care guidance and ACI laundry basics. Pretreat only where the label allows.

How do I keep the collar looking clean?

Good news: the Standwell Collar does much of the work for you. On polos with our signature Standwell Collar, the collar is designed to stand the way it should. Keeping that polished look can be a simple part of your usual wash routine.

Follow your polo’s care label, remove it promptly after washing, and smooth the placket and collar with your hands. Hang it on a smooth hanger and gently set the collar in its natural shape as it dries. Avoid excessive heat, and don’t force a crease or iron it unless the label permits.

For a mark around the neckline, use a treatment suitable for the fabric and its care label. Test an inconspicuous spot first, especially on bright colors, and check that the mark is gone before drying.

100% cotton sport shirts

Wash with care, then do the finishing while the fabric is slightly damp. A good press is mostly preparation.

01

Prepare

Empty pockets, undo buttons, and inspect the collar and cuffs before washing.

02

Wash

Wash with similar colors using the care label’s instructions. Avoid overloading the machine.

03

Shape

Remove promptly. Smooth seams, collar, and cuffs by hand and hang to dry.

04

Press

If ironing is permitted, work while slightly damp and use the heat setting specified by the label.

How to iron your shirt, step by step
  1. Set up. Use a clean soleplate and a stable ironing board. Start with a clean shirt; ironing can set remaining stains.
  2. Check heat. Follow the label’s iron symbol. “100% cotton” does not override finishes, trim, or embroidery. Lightly mist a dry shirt if its instructions allow.
  3. Collar and cuffs. Lay them flat. Press the underside first, then the visible side. Work around buttons.
  4. Shoulders and sleeves. Drape the shoulder over the board’s narrow end. Flatten a sleeve so the two layers sit evenly before pressing.
  5. Fronts and back. Work in small sections, repositioning rather than dragging a large area of fabric. Press around buttons, never over them.
  6. Finish. Hang immediately and let the shirt cool and dry fully before wearing or storing it.

Protect dark fabric and embroidery.Where the label permits, press on the reverse or use a clean pressing cloth. Avoid parking the iron in one place.

Turtleson recommends pressing cotton shirts while slightly damp. Also checked against Café Coton’s cotton shirt guidance.

Steamer, iron, or professional cleaning?

A label permitted steamer can help with light wrinkles. An iron gives a more defined collar and cuff. Professional cleaning is a useful option when the label requires it or you want a finished press; tell the cleaner about stains before they treat the shirt.

If you prefer starch, start lightly and check compatibility with the garment’s finish. It’s a styling choice, not a requirement for care.

Cashmere

Gentle washing and careful drying help preserve a cashmere knit’s feel and shape. Check the label before deciding how to clean it.

01

Check

Use professional cleaning for a dry clean only piece. Don’t assume every cashmere knit is washable.

02

Wash gently

If hand washing is allowed, use cold water and a suitable wool/cashmere detergent. Don’t rub or wring.

03

Dry flat

Support the wet knit. Press out water in a clean towel, then lay flat and ease into shape.

04

Fold

Let it dry fully before storing. Fold rather than hang, especially when damp.

What should I do about pilling?

Friction can produce small fiber balls. Lay the dry knit flat and use a cashmere comb lightly on a small area first. Stop if fibers snag or pull. Avoid aggressively scraping the fabric or treating a delicate knit like heavy upholstery.

Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute care guidance; gentle combing guidance from Woolmark.

How do I put cashmere away for the season?

Clean according to the label, dry fully, and fold into a clean storage container. Check stored knits periodically for insect activity; fragrance sachets aren’t a substitute for clean garments and regular checks.

Merino & wool

Wool’s washing method depends on the finished garment. A machine washable merino label is different from a hand wash or dry clean only label.

01

Read

Choose hand washing, a wool cycle, or professional cleaning according to the label.

02

Keep it gentle

For washable wool, use a suitable mild wool detergent. Avoid vigorous rubbing or wringing.

03

Reshape

Support wet knitwear, remove excess water carefully, and lay it flat on a clean towel.

04

Dry patiently

Keep it away from radiators and direct heat. Fold once completely dry.

Can I put my merino sweater in the washing machine?

Only if the garment label allows machine washing. Use its recommended cycle, detergent, and temperature. A generic “delicates” cycle does not turn a hand wash only knit into a machine washable one.

Tumble dry only when the label specifically permits it. Drying flat is the usual routine for sweaters.

Why has the shoulder or hem changed shape?

Wet knitwear can stretch under its own weight. Drying a sweater on a hanger can leave shoulder bumps or a longer hem. For washable pieces, gentle reshaping while damp may help. Lay flat, support the whole garment, and don’t tug aggressively.

For a dry clean only piece or a major size change, ask a professional cleaner before wetting it.

Performance pants & shorts

A simple wash and a prompt hang can keep the finishing routine short.

01

Empty

Check every pocket and remove belts. Close zippers before washing.

02

Wash

Use the label’s settings, similar colors, and the recommended detergent amount.

03

Hang

Smooth the waistband and seams, then hang to dry where the label allows.

04

Finish gently

Use heat only as permitted by the label; stretch blends and trims need special attention.

Cotton pants & shorts

Choose a routine that protects the color and fit you already like.

01

Sort

Separate similar colors and turn inside out.

02

Wash

Follow the label. Cool water and a gentle routine may help preserve color.

03

Dry carefully

Use only label approved dryer settings, or smooth and hang to dry.

04

Plan the hem

Wash and dry once using your normal label safe routine before tailoring the length.

Especially for cotton blends:Check the complete fiber content. Stretch fibers or fabric finishes may require different heat settings than pure cotton.

Jackets & vests

Shells, insulated pieces, and lined jackets don’t all need the same treatment. Start with the specific care label.

01

Identify

Check the shell, lining, insulation, and any cleaning restrictions.

02

Clean locally

For a small mark, use the label approved spot cleaning method first.

03

Wash as directed

Close fastenings and use the specified wash or professional cleaning method.

04

Dry as directed

Follow the drying instructions. Don’t assume every jacket can tumble dry or be dry cleaned.

What about weather resistant finishes or insulation?

These can need a product specific routine. Don’t add softener, waterproofing treatments, heat, or dry cleaning solvents unless the label or product instructions allow them. Send us the style name and a label photo if the instructions are unclear.

Blended knits

A blend doesn’t automatically follow the care rule of its largest fiber. The finished garment’s label is the deciding guide.

01

Identify

Check all fibers and the garment’s wash instructions.

02

Wash as labeled

Choose the allowed detergent, temperature, and method.

03

Support

Handle wet knitwear gently and follow the drying instructions.

04

Ask if unsure

Send our team the style name and label photo for help choosing the appropriate guide.

The knitwear rescue desk

“I shrank my merino sweater.”

Stop using heat and don’t force it back to size. A knit that has changed shape needs a different response from wool that has severely felted.

What to check first

If the fabric still feels soft and its stitches remain visible, it may be distorted rather than severely felted. If it feels markedly dense, matted, or stiff and has become much smaller, seek professional advice. Appearance alone can’t guarantee recoverability.

Severe felting cannot reliably be undone. More heat, forceful stretching, or a viral “unshrinking” recipe can make matters worse.

When gentle reshaping may help
  1. Check the label. Don’t wet a dry clean only garment; ask a professional cleaner.
  2. For a washable knit with mild shape distortion, follow its washing instructions to gently dampen or wash it.
  3. Support it fully and press water into a clean towel. Don’t wring.
  4. Lay flat, ease the affected areas toward their intended shape without pulling, and let it dry away from direct heat.
  5. If it resists or the fabric is matted, stop. Send us a photo and the care label so we can help assess the next step.

Based on Woolmark’s reshaping guidance. This is for shape distortion, not a promise to reverse shrinkage or felting.

My polo isn’t fresh even after washing.

Start with the underarm and collar areas, correct detergent dosing, an uncrowded wash, and a thorough rinse. Don’t mask the problem with softener or fragrance. Check for remaining odor before drying.

There’s a coffee, food, or sunscreen mark.

Blot excess liquid with a clean cloth rather than rubbing. Don’t iron or tumble dry a visible stain. Choose a treatment compatible with the fabric and its label, and test in an inconspicuous spot first.

Wool and cashmere need wool safe treatment; don’t assume a stain remover used on a cotton shirt is suitable. For a dry clean only or delicate piece, tell the cleaner what caused the mark.

My sweater has pills or a snag.

For small pills, lay the dry knit flat and use a suitable comb very gently. A pulled loop is different: don’t cut it or keep tugging on it. A knitwear repair specialist may be able to help with a snag or hole.

Woolmark pilling guidance.

My cotton sport shirt always looks wrinkled.

Take it out of the machine promptly and smooth it while damp. For a label permitted press, work from collar and cuffs to sleeves, fronts, and back, then hang immediately. Repeated high heat drying is not the first thing to try.

Can I wash all my Turtleson pieces together?

Group by compatible care instructions and color, not just brand. Keep hand wash knits out of a regular cotton load. Wash performance pieces away from rough or lint heavy fabrics, and use the cleaning method allowed for each item.

I can’t find or read the care label.

Check the inside side seam, neck, or waistband. The product name or fiber percentage alone may not identify the safest method. Contact us with the style name, order number if available, and a photo of the piece before you try a new treatment.

A small, useful kit

You don’t need a laundry laboratory.

A suitable detergent

Regular detergent for compatible washable garments; a wool/cashmere wash for washable knits.

A mesh laundry bag

Helpful protection for compatible delicate items. It does not replace a hand wash instruction.

A clean towel

For supporting a wet knit, pressing out excess water, and drying flat.

A clean iron & pressing cloth

For a label permitted finish, with extra care around dark fabrics and embroidery.
